Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons — a dry season from November to April and a wet season from May to October. The best time to visit is the dry season, particularly December through March, when temperatures hover around 27–32°C, humidity is manageable, and there is little rainfall to interrupt outdoor sightseeing. This is peak tourist season, and while prices are higher and crowds larger at the main attractions, the city operates at its most comfortable and vibrant. The street food culture, rooftop bar scene, and market atmosphere are all at their best during the cooler dry months.
The Tet holiday — Vietnamese New Year — falls in late January or early February and represents the single most important event in the Vietnamese calendar. The week around Tet is both the most festive and the most challenging time to visit: the city empties as millions of residents return to their home provinces, many businesses close for several days, and those that remain open may have reduced services. On the positive side, the run-up to Tet (the two weeks before the holiday) sees the city decorated with plum blossoms and gold chrysanthemums, the streets filled with market stalls selling traditional Tet foods and decorations, and a festive atmosphere that is genuinely special to witness.
The wet season from May to October brings daily afternoon thunderstorms that typically last one to three hours before clearing. The rain is heavy but usually short, and the mornings and evenings remain perfectly pleasant for exploration. Prices drop significantly during the wet season, making it an excellent time for budget travelers. The city's museum culture — War Remnants Museum, Fine Arts Museum, Museum of Vietnamese History — is completely unaffected by rain, and the street food scene operates year-round. Day trips to the Cu Chi Tunnels and Mekong Delta are possible in all seasons, though some Mekong waterways see higher water levels during the wet months.
