The best time to visit Zanzibar is during the dry seasons — either the long dry season from June to October or the short dry season from December to February. During these periods, rainfall is minimal, seas are clear and calm, and beach and diving conditions are at their best.

June to October: Long Dry Season (Peak)
Zanzibar's peak season runs June through October — clear skies, low humidity, and the best sea conditions of the year. Water visibility for diving and snorkelling is exceptional (up to 30m at Mnemba Atoll). The southeast trade winds (kusi) create excellent conditions for kiteboarding at Paje and Jambiani on the east coast. Sea temperatures are at their coolest (26°C) but still comfortably warm. July and August are the busiest months — particularly the north coast resorts at Nungwi and Kendwa — and rates peak accordingly. Book 3–6 months ahead for high-quality properties in this period.
December to February: Short Dry Season
December through February is Zanzibar's second best window — warm, sunny, and mostly dry, with the northeast monsoon (kaskazi) bringing warmer waters (28°C) and a different sailing character to Stone Town harbour. This is a popular period for European winter-escape holidays and a good time for combining a Tanzania mainland safari (January–February calving season) with Zanzibar beach time. New Year period sees significant price increases at beach resorts — book early for December 25–January 6.
March to May: Long Rains (Avoid)
March through May is Zanzibar's wet season — the long rains brought by the southeast monsoon. April is typically the wettest month, with heavy daily rainfall that can disrupt beach activities significantly. Many properties close or reduce services in April and early May. Diving continues year-round but visibility can decrease in the rainy season due to runoff. Some travellers specifically seek this period for dramatically reduced rates (40–60% lower than peak) and a quieter, more local atmosphere in Stone Town.
Stone Town: Year-Round
Stone Town is interesting year-round — its cultural and historical attractions are unaffected by weather. The annual Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF, typically July) brings a week of open-air screenings and cultural events to the Old Fort. The Mwaka Kogwa Festival (July/August) marks the Shirazi New Year with traditional rituals in Makunduchi village. The Sauti za Busara music festival (February) celebrates Swahili and African music across Stone Town venues — one of East Africa's finest music events.
Diving Seasons
Zanzibar diving has two distinct windows. The best all-round diving is June–October (long dry, northeast monsoon over — clear water, excellent visibility, whale sharks possible). December–February is also good, with whale shark aggregations off the northwest coast. March–May and November see reduced visibility and rougher conditions at some exposed sites. Mnemba Atoll (northeast Zanzibar) is the premier site — a protected marine reserve with reef sharks, turtles, dolphins, and magnificent coral gardens. Dive operators based in Nungwi and Kizimkazi are the most reputable.
