Things to Do in Nairobi

May 28, 2026

Nairobi is one of Africa's most dynamic capitals — a sprawling, fast-paced city of over four million people that serves as the gateway to some of the continent's greatest safari destinations. Yet Nairobi is far more than just a transit hub. It is home to the world's only urban national park where lions roam against a city skyline, a world-class elephant orphanage, the legendary Giraffe Centre, a burgeoning arts and food scene, and some of Africa's finest restaurants and galleries.

Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is one of the world's most improbable wildlife spectacles — 117km² of protected savannah sharing a fence with Africa's fourth-largest city. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, rhinos, buffalos, hippos, and over 400 bird species live within sight of Nairobi's downtown skyscrapers. The park opens at 6am and a morning game drive — typically 3–4 hours — can produce extraordinary sightings of black rhinos (one of Kenya's most important populations), large predator prides, and herds of giraffe and zebra against the city backdrop. The park is best accessed by car (private vehicle or hired taxi with safari guide) — Uber drivers generally do not know the park roads.

David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust runs one of Africa's most remarkable conservation programmes — rescuing orphaned elephant calves (mostly from human-wildlife conflict or poaching) and raising them for eventual reintroduction to the wild. The public visiting hour (11am daily, advance booking required) allows close observation of the muddy, exuberant baby elephants being bottle-fed and play-fighting in a red-dirt enclosure near the park entrance. Foster parent sponsorships are available and the programme is one of Kenya's most successful conservation stories. Do not miss this if you visit Nairobi.

Giraffe Centre

The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Giraffe Centre in Karen breeds and rehabilitates the endangered Rothschild giraffe (fewer than 1,600 remain in the wild). Visitors can hand-feed the resident giraffes from a raised wooden platform and, if lucky, receive a giraffe "kiss" — a long, dark tongue investigating your palm and occasionally your face. The centre also has a small orphaned animal sanctuary and education programme. Allow 1–2 hours; it is particularly memorable for children. The adjacent Karen Blixen Museum (the home from Out of Africa, kept as it was when Blixen left in 1931) is worth the additional hour.

Arts and Food Scene

Nairobi's creative scene has transformed dramatically in the past decade. The Nairobi National Museum on Museum Hill houses excellent natural history and cultural collections including the Boy of Turkana (one of the most significant hominin fossils ever found). The GoDown Arts Centre in Industrial Area and the One Off Gallery in Rosslyn are excellent contemporary art spaces. Nairobi's restaurant scene is genuinely outstanding — Talisman in Karen, Cultiva in Westlands, and Carnivore (the legendary game meat restaurant at Langata) represent different but equally celebrated aspects of the city's food culture. The Mama Oliech fish restaurant in Hurlingham is one of East Africa's great lunch destinations.

Day Trips from Nairobi

Hells Gate National Park (90km, 1.5 hours) — where scenes from The Lion King were partly inspired — is unique in Kenya as a park where you can hike, cycle, and rock climb among wildlife (no big predators here) through dramatic volcanic gorges. The nearby Lake Naivasha offers boat trips among hippos and extraordinary birdlife. Lake Nakuru National Park (3 hours) is famous for its flamingo flocks and rhino sanctuary. For a full Masai Mara experience, daily scheduled flights from Wilson Airport reach the Mara in 45 minutes — a far better option than the 5–6 hour road drive.
