Find the Perfect Spain Trip for Every Traveler

May 6, 2026

Spain offers one of the most diverse holiday menus in Europe — world-class city breaks in Barcelona and Madrid, architectural wonders and flamenco in Andalusia, beach holidays on the Costa del Sol and the Balearic Islands, Michelin-starred food in San Sebastián, and hiking through the Picos de Europa. Whatever type of vacation you're looking for, Spain has a version that will exceed your expectations. Here's a guide to the best Spain vacation options.

Barcelona City Break

Barcelona is one of Europe's most popular short-break destinations — a city of extraordinary architecture, excellent food, and a Mediterranean lifestyle that feels uniquely its own. A 3–5 day Barcelona city break typically includes the Sagrada Família and Park Güell (Gaudí's masterpieces), the Gothic Quarter and El Born neighborhood, a day on the beach at Barceloneta, and excellent tapas and pintxos evenings. Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer the best weather-to-crowd ratio.

Best for: First-time visitors to Spain, couples, architecture and food lovers

Andalusia Tour: Seville, Córdoba, Granada

An Andalusia circuit — combining Seville (the Alcázar and flamenco), Córdoba (the Mezquita), and Granada (the Alhambra) — is one of the great European cultural tours. All three cities are connected by efficient train services, making the circuit easy without a car. A 7–10 day Andalusia itinerary gives you time to absorb the Moorish heritage, explore the White Villages of the interior, and experience the extraordinary tapas culture of Granada.

Best for: History and culture lovers, first-timers to southern Spain, those interested in Islamic art and architecture

Best time: March–May or September–October (summer is extremely hot)

Madrid + Day Trips

Madrid as a holiday base offers extraordinary depth: three world-class art museums (Prado, Reina Sofía, Thyssen), a royal palace, Europe's most authentic tapas culture, and some of Spain's most rewarding day trips — Toledo (30 min), Segovia (30 min), and El Escorial (1h) — all by high-speed AVE train. A 4–6 day Madrid vacation gives you time to see the art, eat the tapas, and take at least two day trips.

Best for: Art lovers, history enthusiasts, food travelers

Costa del Sol Beach Holiday

The Costa del Sol — stretching from Málaga to Marbella and beyond — is Spain's most popular beach holiday destination. Long sandy beaches, 320 days of sunshine a year, warm summer sea temperatures (22–24°C), and a resort infrastructure ranging from high-rise Torremolinos to the upmarket glamour of Marbella's Puerto Banús make it the classic Spanish beach vacation. Málaga itself is a wonderful city — the birthplace of Picasso, with an excellent old city and some of the best-value tapas in Andalusia.

Best for: Families, beach lovers, golfers, those seeking reliable summer sunshine

Best time: June–September for beach weather; April–May and October for milder temperatures and fewer crowds

Balearic Islands Escape

The four Balearic Islands — Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera — each offer a distinct personality. Mallorca combines beautiful old city architecture in Palma with dramatic coastal scenery and sophisticated cycling and food tourism. Menorca is the most preserved and family-friendly, with UNESCO-protected coastline and Bronze Age ruins. Ibiza is synonymous with electronic music clubbing but also has wonderful beaches, a beautiful UNESCO-listed old city, and excellent local food. Formentera is a tiny island of extraordinary beaches, best reached by ferry from Ibiza.

Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage

The Camino de Santiago — the ancient pilgrimage route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia — is one of the world's most popular long-distance walks, attracting over 400,000 pilgrims and walkers annually. The most popular route, the Camino Francés (French Way, 780 km from the French border), takes approximately 30–35 days. Shorter options include the Camino Portugués from Porto (230 km), the Camino del Norte along the northern coast, and the Camino Primitivo (the original route, from Oviedo). Accommodation in pilgrim hostels (albergues) is affordable and the community of walkers is one of the great appeals.

San Sebastián Food Vacation

San Sebastián (Donostia) in the Basque Country has more Michelin stars per capita than almost anywhere on earth — Arzak, Mugaritz, Akelarre, and Martín Berasategui are among the world's most celebrated restaurants. But the city's most democratic pleasure is its pintxos culture: the old city's bars, each displaying elaborate pintxos (Basque open sandwiches) on the counter, offer extraordinary food for €2–4 per piece. Combined with La Concha beach — one of the most beautiful urban beaches in Europe — San Sebastián is perhaps Spain's most complete vacation destination.
