The Masai Mara
The Masai Mara National Reserve is Kenya's most celebrated safari destination — 1,510km² of open savannah and riverine forest in the southwest, contiguous with Tanzania's Serengeti to form the world's greatest wildlife ecosystem. The Mara is home year-round to exceptional resident wildlife populations: lions in large prides, leopards in the fig trees along the Mara River, cheetahs on the open plains, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and over 450 bird species. The annual Great Wildebeest Migration — when 1.5–2 million wildebeest cross the Mara River from Tanzania between July and October — is one of nature's most spectacular events. Private conservancies adjacent to the Reserve (Olare Motorogi, Mara North, Naboisho) offer exclusive game drives without the vehicle congestion found at popular sites inside the national reserve.
Amboseli National Park
Amboseli, at the foot of Kilimanjaro on the Tanzanian border, offers Kenya's most iconic photographic backdrop — herds of large-tusked elephants silhouetted against Africa's highest mountain (5,895m). Amboseli has one of Africa's best-studied and most relaxed elephant populations, allowing for close, unhurried observation of family dynamics. The park is compact (392km²) and best visited as a 2–3 night stay. The swamps fed by Kilimanjaro's glacial melt support extraordinary concentrations of waterbirds and are a critical water source for the region's Maasai communities.
Samburu and the Northern Frontier
Samburu National Reserve in Kenya's arid north is a dramatically different safari experience from the Mara — a riverine strip of doum palms and acacia trees along the Ewaso Nyiro River, surrounded by semi-desert scrub. Samburu specialises in "the Special Five" — northern-adapted species found nowhere else in Kenya: Grevy's zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx. The landscape, the Samburu people (different from the Maasai), and the dry-country wildlife combine to create an atmosphere of rugged, romantic Africa.
The Kenyan Coast
Kenya's Indian Ocean coastline — 480km from Somalia to Tanzania — offers a very different face of the country. Diani Beach south of Mombasa has beautiful white sand and good reef snorkelling. Watamu Marine National Park near Malindi has some of East Africa's finest coral gardens. The Lamu Archipelago — a group of ancient Swahili island towns off the northern coast — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of remarkable cultural preservation: no cars, donkey transport, and dhow-sailing traditions maintained for 700 years. Lamu Town is one of the most atmospheric places in Africa.
Mount Kenya and the Laikipia Plateau
Mount Kenya (5,199m, Africa's second-highest mountain) offers multi-day trekking on technical and non-technical routes through extraordinary Afro-alpine scenery — giant lobelias, groundsel forests, and glaciated peaks above 4,000m. The Laikipia Plateau north of Mount Kenya is Kenya's second most important wildlife area — a patchwork of private conservancies and community ranches that collectively protect more large mammals than the Masai Mara, including critically endangered black rhinos, African wild dogs, and large elephant herds. The Laikipia experience — on private land, with exclusive game drives and walking safaris — is less crowded and in many respects more rewarding than the national reserve system.
