Buenos Aires is a city of dramatically different neighbourhoods, each with its own character, pace, and feel.
Choosing Your Neighbourhood in Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires is a city of dramatically different neighbourhoods, each with its own character, pace, and feel. The good news is that several of the best visitor areas — Palermo, Recoleta, San Telmo, and Microcentro — are well connected by the Subte metro and rideshare apps, so wherever you base yourself you can easily explore the rest. For most first-time visitors, Palermo or Recoleta offer the best balance of safety, convenience, restaurant access, and atmosphere. Return visitors often gravitate toward San Telmo for its authentic Buenos Aires character.
Best Areas to Stay
Palermo is the most popular neighbourhood for visitors and offers the greatest variety of hotels and guesthouses across all price ranges. Within Palermo, Soho and Hollywood are the most vibrant areas — excellent restaurants, cocktail bars, boutique shops, and parks all within walking distance. The neighbourhood has a young, cosmopolitan feel and is very well served by rideshare apps and taxis.
Recoleta is Buenos Aires at its most elegant — wide avenues lined with French-style mansions, the famous cemetery, and the Floralis Genérica sculpture in the park. It's home to the city's finest luxury hotels and upmarket restaurants. Quieter at night than Palermo, it's ideal for travelers who prefer refinement over nightlife buzz.
San Telmo is the historic, bohemian neighbourhood — cobblestone streets, 19th-century architecture, antique dealers, milongas, and a genuine artistic community. It has fewer accommodation options than Palermo but those it has tend to have more character. The neighbourhood is safe for visitors who stay aware, though parts toward La Boca become less comfortable after dark.
Microcentro/Puerto Madero is central and convenient for the airport bus and business travelers, but lacks the neighbourhood charm of Palermo or Recoleta. Puerto Madero's waterfront hotels offer stunning river views.
Luxury Hotels
The Alvear Palace Hotel is Buenos Aires' most iconic grand hotel — a 1932 landmark in Recoleta with butler service, a renowned afternoon tea, a celebrated restaurant, and rooms of old-world European opulence. From $450 per night, it represents the pinnacle of traditional Argentine luxury. The Faena Hotel Buenos Aires in Puerto Madero takes a completely different approach — Philippe Starck-designed fantasy spaces, a rooftop pool, legendary El Cabaret dinner show, and an edgy glamour. From $350 per night.
In Palermo, the Legado Mítico is a stunning boutique hotel — 11 rooms each themed after a famous Argentine figure, set in a meticulously restored early 20th-century house with a pool and excellent breakfast. From $250 per night. Mine Hotel in Palermo is another beloved boutique offering stunning design, a pool, and a great terrace from $180 per night.
Mid-Range Hotels
The Home Hotel Buenos Aires in Palermo Hollywood is one of the city's most beloved mid-range properties — a converted house with a gorgeous garden pool, stylish rooms, and genuinely friendly service from $150 per night. Fierro Hotel in Palermo offers smart contemporary design, a rooftop plunge pool, and an excellent restaurant from $130 per night.
In Recoleta, the Design CE Hotel offers contemporary rooms with some of the neighbourhood's best views from $100 per night. The Hotel Nuss Buenos Aires in Palermo is a clean, modern boutique from $80 per night with complimentary breakfast and a lively lobby bar.

Dorm beds from $15, private rooms from $45. Ostinatto in Microcentro is the music-themed hostel with excellent common spaces and easy Subte access, dorms from $13.
For budget private rooms in Palermo, the Palermo House B&B offers simple, clean rooms in a family-run house from $40 per night. In San Telmo, Amerika Hostel provides a well-located, sociable base from $12 per dorm bed.
Booking Tips
- Currency considerations: Many accommodation providers quote rates in US dollars. Paying in dollars cash (at a favorable exchange rate) rather than by credit card can result in significant savings — ask when booking.
- Palermo for first-timers: If you're visiting Buenos Aires for the first time and want the easiest, most enjoyable base with great food and transport options, choose Palermo.
- Avoid January heat: Buenos Aires in January can reach 38°C+ — ensure your accommodation has air conditioning if traveling in peak summer.
- Check for breakfast: Many boutique hotels include breakfast — often a generous spread of medialunas (croissants), juice, coffee, and pastries. This can save money and time.
- Airport transfers: Ezeiza International Airport is 35km from the city centre (45–90 minutes). Manuel Tienda León coaches run to the city every 30 minutes. Book airport transfers in advance for late arrivals.
