Best Areas to Stay
Msasani Peninsula is Dar's most pleasant residential and expat area — a leafy thumb of land north of the city centre, home to excellent restaurants, the Slipway shopping complex, and good boutique guesthouses. It's about 10km from the city centre but worth the taxi journey for a significantly nicer environment. Oyster Bay (adjacent to Msasani) is where most of Dar's diplomatic community lives — quieter, greener, and with direct beach access. City Centre accommodation suits business travellers who need to be near the port and commercial district, or budget travellers prioritising central access.
Luxury Hotels
The Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam, The Kilimanjaro is the city's premier landmark hotel — a high-rise tower on the harbour with panoramic Dar bay views, excellent facilities and the best business services in the city. The Protea Hotel by Marriott Dar es Salaam Courtyard and Southern Sun Dar es Salaam are reliable upper-mid options in the city centre. For a more distinctive experience, White Sands Hotel north of the city on the Msasani coast offers a genuine beach resort feel within Dar's urban area.
Mid-Range Options
The Slipway Hotel in Msasani is a well-regarded mid-range option with good restaurant access and a pleasant waterfront setting. The Colosseum Hotel in the city centre offers reliable rooms and a central location. Several comfortable guesthouses in Oyster Bay and Msasani provide quiet alternatives to the business hotels — Oyster Bay Hotel is a long-standing option with a pleasant garden and pool.
Budget Accommodation
Budget accommodation in Dar is concentrated in the city centre near the ferry terminal and Kariakoo market. Simple guesthouses offering clean rooms from USD $25–50 per night are plentiful. The Econo Lodge and several smaller establishments cater to backpackers and transit travellers. Note that the immediate city centre area is noisy and bustling — not ideal for those seeking peace.
Booking Tips
Dar is a significant business travel hub and weekday hotel rates are often higher than weekends. Book ahead for the June–September dry season, when both business and leisure travel peaks. The Julius Nyerere International Airport is 13km southwest of the city centre — allow 45–90 minutes for the transfer depending on time of day, as traffic can be severe. Airport taxis are metered; agree the fare before departure or use a hotel transfer. The Dar ferry terminal for Zanzibar services is in the city centre — most good hotels are within 20 minutes by taxi.
