Where to Stay in Patagonia

Accommodation in Patagonia varies dramatically by location — from some of the world's most extraordinary luxury eco-lodges in the wilderness to simple mountain huts and campsites along the trekking routes.

Choosing Where to Stay in Patagonia

Accommodation in Patagonia varies dramatically by location — from some of the world's most extraordinary luxury eco-lodges in the wilderness to simple mountain huts and campsites along the trekking routes. The key is to match your accommodation choices to your itinerary: base yourself in El Calafate for glacier access, El Chaltén for Fitz Roy trekking, Bariloche for the northern lakes, and Puerto Natales or inside Torres del Paine for the iconic Chilean parks. The remoteness of Patagonia means that booking accommodation months in advance is essential for peak season visits (December–February).

El Calafate: Gateway to Perito Moreno

El Calafate is the main service town and most visited hub, with the widest range of accommodation. The Eolo Patagonia's Spirit is a stunning 17-room estancia-style luxury lodge set in the open steppe with panoramic Andes views and all-inclusive guided excursions — rates from $700 per night all-inclusive. The Xelena Hotel & Suites offers lake-view rooms with a spa from $300 per night. For mid-range travelers, the Hotel Kau Yatún offers comfortable rooms in beautiful gardens from $120 per night. Budget travelers have excellent options at Hostel del Glaciar Pioneros from $20 per dorm.

El Chaltén: Trekking Capital

El Chaltén has grown rapidly from a single-street outpost to a lively village with excellent accommodation. The Explora El Chaltén (opening seasonally) offers the area's most extraordinary experience — all-inclusive guided hiking with expert naturalist guides and outstanding food, from $600 per night. The Aguas Arriba Lodge on Lago del Desierto (reached by boat) offers remote luxury with superb fly-fishing access from $350 per night all-inclusive.

For mid-range stays, the Senderos Hostería in the village centre is excellent — comfortable rooms, a good restaurant, and a warm atmosphere from $100 per night. Budget trekkers are well served by the Rancho Grande Hostel — the village's largest and most social hostel, with dorms from $20 and private rooms from $60.

Torres del Paine (Chilean Patagonia)

Inside Torres del Paine National Park, the legendary Explora Patagonia is one of the world's great wilderness hotels — all-inclusive guided excursions, world-class food, and a stunning lakeside location, from $800 per night all-inclusive. The Tierra Patagonia hotel offers a similarly outstanding experience with a distinctive wooden-slatted design that blends into the landscape, from $600 per night. The Las Torres Patagonia hotel, at the base of the towers themselves, offers good mid-range to upscale rooms and is the only lodge with direct access to the Torre Central trek start, from $250 per night.

For trekkers doing the W or Circuit, the CONAF-approved campsite and refugio network (Vertice Patagonia and Las Torres) provides mountain huts with meals and camping along the trail. These must be booked through the respective companies' websites months in advance for peak season.

Bariloche: Northern Patagonia

San Carlos de Bariloche offers excellent accommodation in Argentina's most Swiss-feeling city. The iconic Llao Llao Hotel & Resort, 25km from town, is Argentina's most celebrated mountain resort — a magnificent 1938 lodge set on a promontory above two lakes with a golf course, spa, and extraordinary Andes panoramas. From $400 per night. In town, Design Suites Bariloche offers contemporary lake-view rooms from $120 per night, and the Hotel Edenia provides comfortable mid-range accommodation from $80 per night.

Unique Accommodation

Estancias (traditional sheep and cattle ranches) offer one of Patagonia's most authentic experiences — working with gauchos, horseback riding across the steppe, and experiencing the traditional asado culture. Estancia Cristina, accessible only by boat across Lago Argentino from El Calafate, offers a remote and extraordinary experience at a working ranch. Estancia Nibepo Aike, within Los Glaciares National Park near El Calafate, offers horseback rides to glacier viewpoints and a genuine ranch atmosphere from $250 per night.
