Choosing where to stay in Rio de Janeiro is one of the most important decisions of your trip — the city's neighborhoods are spread across a complex geography of beaches, mountains, forests, and bays, and each area offers a completely different experience. Best Neighborhoods to Stay
Ipanema and Leblon are Rio's most upscale beach neighborhoods — beautiful, relatively safe, and within walking distance of each other. For the lowest prices, budget hotels in Flamengo and Catete — older residential neighborhoods a short metro ride from the beach — offer genuine value, though the neighborhoods are less atmospheric than Zona Sul.
Booking Tips
Book 6–12 months ahead for Carnival — the best properties sell out within days of opening their reservation calendars and prices are typically 3–5x normal rates. New Year's Eve on Copacabana is similarly in huge demand. For regular visits, 4–8 weeks advance booking is usually sufficient. Note that Rio's hotel tax is included in most quoted rates. Safety note: all neighborhoods mentioned above are generally safe for tourists, but research the specific address of your accommodation — some streets even in tourist areas have higher risk.
