Where to Stay in Spain

May 28, 2026

Spain offers a superb range of accommodation, from the spectacular parador (state-run castle hotels) network to sleek design hotels in Madrid and Barcelona, Moorish-style riads in Granada and Seville, beachfront resorts on the Costa del Sol, and rustic rural houses (casas rurales) across the interior. The country's hotel sector is vast and competitive, ensuring excellent value and quality across all price ranges.

Best Areas to Stay

In Barcelona, the Eixample district is the most convenient base — central, well-connected by metro, and home to many of the city's best restaurants and Modernista architecture. El Born and Gothic Quarter offer medieval atmosphere and easy access to the waterfront but can be very noisy at night. In Madrid, the Salamanca neighbourhood is the most upscale area, while Malasaña and Chueca offer boutique hotels in a vibrant, creative neighbourhood. In Seville, staying in the Santa Cruz barrio (the old Jewish quarter adjacent to the cathedral and Alcázar) is magical — narrow whitewashed lanes, orange trees, and a beautifully preserved medieval atmosphere. In Granada, the Albaicín neighbourhood across from the Alhambra offers cave hotels carved into hillside rock, with some of the most extraordinary views in Spain.

Luxury Stays

Spain's Paradores are a national treasure — over 90 historic properties including converted castles, palaces, convents, and monasteries offer four-star quality with extraordinary architecture and settings, at prices well below comparable luxury hotels. The Parador de Granada (inside the Alhambra grounds), Parador de Toledo, and Parador de Santiago de Compostela (one of the world's oldest hotels) are bucket-list stays. In Barcelona, the Hotel Arts and Mandarin Oriental represent the city's finest. Madrid's Hotel Ritz (now Mandarin Oriental Ritz), with its Belle Époque grandeur, is magnificent. Seville's Hotel Alfonso XIII, built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, is a stunning neo-Mudéjar palace.

Mid-Range and Boutique Options

Spain's mid-range accommodation is outstanding. Expect to pay €80–€180 per night for a quality boutique hotel in Barcelona or Madrid. The country has a rich tradition of casas de huéspedes and boutique hotels in restored historic buildings — tiled courtyard hotels in Seville and Granada, converted modernista buildings in Barcelona, and art-filled townhouses in Madrid's creative neighbourhoods. The casa rural network in the countryside (Castile, Extremadura, Galicia, Pyrenees) offers characterful farmhouse and village house accommodation with local breakfast and cooking, typically €60–€120 per night for a double room with extraordinary peace and quiet.

Budget Accommodation

Spain is excellent for budget travellers, particularly outside peak summer months. Barcelona and Madrid have vibrant hostel scenes — Generator Barcelona in the Gràcia neighbourhood and Safestay Madrid in the Retiro area offer stylish social hostel experiences with dorm beds from €20–€35. In Seville and Granada, budget guesthouses in the historic centres offer doubles from €45–€70. Across Spain, albergues (pilgrim hostels) along the Camino de Santiago provide dormitory accommodation for €10–€18 per night including basic facilities. The Canary and Balearic Islands have numerous all-inclusive resorts offering full-board accommodation at very competitive prices, especially in shoulder season.

Booking Advice

Barcelona and Madrid accommodation books up quickly for summer and major events — book at least 3–4 months ahead for July–August. Seville's Feria de Abril (April Fair) and Semana Santa (Easter Holy Week) are the city's peak events and fill every bed within 50 kilometres — book 6+ months ahead. Paradores can be booked directly through parador.es, often with promotional rates for early booking or consecutive nights. For rural casas, the Escapada Rural and Toprural platforms have the best Spanish countryside listings. Use the Renfe website to research rail access when choosing your base — Spain's AVE network makes city-hopping easy and affordable.
