Amalfi Coast

Drama carved into the cliffs

Pastel villages tumbling toward a shimmering sea, where each hairpin turn reveals another scene too beautiful for words.

The Amalfi Coast is 50 kilometers of sheer cliff faces, lemon groves, and pastel villages clinging to terraces above an impossibly blue sea. There is nowhere in Europe quite like it.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 for its extraordinary cultural landscape, the Amalfi Coast stretches along the southern edge of the Sorrentine Peninsula in Campania, Italy. The main road — the SS163 — is one of the most scenic drives in the world, threading through Positano, Praiano, Amalfi town, Ravello, and Atrani on a narrow corniche barely wide enough for two cars. The scenery is relentlessly spectacular: ancient watchtowers, fishing boats, cascading bougainvillea, and the deep-blue Tyrrhenian Sea below every viewpoint.

Town by town

Positano is the most photogenic and most expensive — a cascade of pink and white houses tumbling toward a small pebble beach. Amalfi is the historic heart, with its Norman cathedral and the busiest ferry hub. Ravello, perched 365 meters above sea level, is quieter, more refined, and famous for its music festival and garden villas. Praiano is the quieter alternative to Positano, favored by those who want the views without the crowds. For day trips, Pompeii and Herculaneum are easily reached from Sorrento by circumvesuviana train.

Getting around — the most important logistical point

Do not drive the Amalfi Coast in high season if you can avoid it. Traffic jams are legendary, parking is nearly nonexistent, and the road is genuinely challenging for inexperienced drivers. The ferry network between towns is excellent, affordable, and far more enjoyable than sitting in a bus queue. SITA buses run the whole coast but are extremely crowded July through August. Arriving by water taxi or ferry from Naples or Sorrento directly to your hotel's dock is the most elegant solution — and often the fastest.

Top experiences not to miss

  • Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) — a 7.8 km ridge walk between Agerola and Nocelle with panoramic views of the entire coast; best done west to east to finish in Positano.
  • Boat trip to Capri — the island is a ferry ride from Amalfi or Positano; the Blue Grotto sea cave is accessible in calm morning conditions.
  • Ravello's Villa Rufolo gardens — the terraced gardens overlook the coast from 365 meters and inspired Wagner's Parsifal; magical at sunset.
  • Pompeii day trip — the ancient Roman city preserved by Vesuvius is 90 minutes away and genuinely one of the world's great archaeological sites.
  • Limoncello tasting — the local sfusato amalfitano lemon is the basis for the coast's famous liqueur; several family producers offer tastings along the main road.

Food and the local table

The Amalfi Coast's culinary identity is built on lemons. The sfusato amalfitano is a local citrus variety used in limoncello, lemon pasta, and granite. Seafood dominates every menu — spaghetti alle vongole, fresh grilled branzino, seafood risotto, and frittura di paranza (mixed fried seafood). The local white wines, particularly Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo from the nearby Campania hills, pair perfectly with almost everything on the table.

Planning your Amalfi Coast trip with AI

Transport logistics are the most stressful part of an Amalfi Coast trip for most visitors, and getting them right makes the difference between a frustrating and a magical holiday. An AI travel planner can map out which towns to use as a base (Praiano and Atrani are often better value than Positano for the same views), build a ferry and boat schedule that eliminates the need for driving, compare accommodation options by proximity to ferry docks and coastal paths, and flag which months each village is manageable on foot versus overwhelmed with day-trippers.
