Ostrava's industrial past is its proudest asset — Dolní Vítkovice, a vast 19th-century ironworks and coking plant, has been converted into one of Europe's most remarkable cultural districts, hosting concerts, exhibitions and a science centre inside a former gas holder of vertiginous scale. Once dismissed as a grey mining town, Ostrava has become a model of post-industrial reinvention — the Czech Silicon Valley has taken root here, alongside a craft beer scene, a thriving arts community and the extraordinary Stodolní Street nightlife district. The old town square retains its Baroque character, while the Silesian Ostrava Castle offers medieval counterpoint to the industrial heritage. It is the Czech Republic's most authentically evolving city.
