Santorini

The Aegean's most celebrated island

Whitewashed cliffs, infinite ocean views, and sunsets that have made philosophers out of ordinary travellers.

Santorini is the remnant of one of history's largest volcanic eruptions, a crescent of towering cliffs surrounding a submerged caldera — and the whitewashed villages and blue-domed churches perched above that void have become a symbol of the good life recognized worldwide.

The island's dramatic shape is the direct result of a Minoan-era volcanic eruption (c. 1600 BC) that may have contributed to the collapse of the Bronze Age Aegean world. Today, the caldera rim hosts the island's most famous villages — Oia, Fira, and Imerovigli — stacked in dense layers of cave houses, boutique hotels, and restaurants, all oriented toward the western view and the famous sunset. The caldera drops 300 meters straight down to the sea; the visual effect is unlike anywhere else in the Mediterranean.

Oia, Fira, and the villages

Oia (pronounced "ee-ah") is the postcard-perfect northern village, famous for its sunset views and the most photographed streetscape in Greece. It's also the most expensive and most crowded. Fira, the island's capital, has better infrastructure, more dining and nightlife options, and slightly more reasonable prices. Imerovigli, between the two, offers equally good caldera views with a quieter atmosphere. The eastern side of the island — Perissa and Perivolos — has black sand beaches, water sports, and a completely different, more casual vibe that many visitors overlook.

Beyond the sunset

Santorini's volcanic history has shaped its unique agriculture: Assyrtiko grapes grown in low-lying basket-trained vines on volcanic soil produce the island's distinctive crisp white wine. A winery tour and tasting is one of the island's most underrated experiences. The ancient site of Akrotiri — a Bronze Age city buried by the same eruption that created the caldera — is one of the Mediterranean's most important archaeological sites. Boat excursions to the active volcanic islets of Nea Kameni include a swim in naturally warm waters and stunning caldera views from the water.

Top experiences not to miss

  • Caldera hike (Fira to Oia) — a 9 km walk along the rim with continuous sea views; allow 3–4 hours and bring sun protection.
  • Assyrtiko wine tasting — Santo Wines cooperative above Pyrgos and Estate Argyros in Episkopi are among the best wineries open to visitors.
  • Akrotiri archaeological site — the Minoan city preserved by volcanic ash rivals Pompeii in its state of preservation; often crowd-free in morning hours.
  • Boat trip to the volcano — guided boat excursions from Fira's old port include a walk on Nea Kameni's active crater and a swim in geothermally heated water.
  • Sunrise at Oia Castle — while sunset at Oia is a tourist ritual, sunrise at the same spot is equally beautiful and attended by almost nobody.

When to go and what to avoid

July and August bring extreme heat (30–35°C), massive cruise ship day-trippers flooding the caldera path, and prices at their annual peak. The shoulder seasons — particularly May, June, and September — offer the same landscape with better hiking conditions, fewer crowds at the archaeological sites and wineries, and more authentic dining experiences as locals return to their regular tables. The island essentially closes from November to March, with most hotels and restaurants shuttered for the winter.

Planning your Santorini trip with AI

Accommodation in Oia with genuine caldera views sells out 6–12 months in advance for peak summer dates, and the price spread between similar-looking properties is enormous. An AI travel planner can scan options across Oia, Imerovigli, and Fira simultaneously, comparing actual caldera view quality (not just the listing photos), included breakfast, proximity to hiking paths and ferry connections, and cancellation policies — and flag the best-value properties for your specific travel dates. It can also help sequence your days to catch the volcano boat early, avoid cruise ship crowds at the main sites, and identify which restaurant tables have the caldera view worth paying for.
