Best Time to Visit Santorini

May 28, 2026

The best time to visit Santorini is May–June or September–October — when the weather is warm and sunny, the Aegean Sea is swimmable, and the island is far more manageable than during the peak summer crush. The shoulder seasons offer a genuinely superior combination of conditions, value, and atmosphere.

Best Time to Visit Santorini: Spring (April–June)

April to June is one of the best time to visit Santorini, with May and June among the finest months. Expect average temperatures of 20–27°C, pleasant weather, and the sea warming to swimmable temperatures (around 20–22°C by June), while blooming landscapes still brighten the hillsides and the island's restaurants and hotels are open and welcoming without the overwhelming July–August crowds. Spring also suits hiking and other outdoor activities thanks to comfortable temperatures and smaller crowds. Late April is pleasant but the sea is still cool. Winery visits are also especially enjoyable at this time. This is the peak wedding and honeymoon season — book well in advance, as popular cave hotels fill up early.

Summer (July–August): Peak Season for Cruise Ships

July and August are the peak season and high season on Santorini, making them the busiest and most expensive time to visit. These summer months are the height of the tourist season, with many tourists filling Fira and Oia daily, queues for the sunset viewpoint in Oia stretching for hundreds of metres, and temperatures frequently exceeding 30°C. The famous meltemi wind, which blows strongly from the north across the Aegean Sea in July and August, can make boat trips uncomfortable and whip up sand on the beaches. This period suits beach lovers and water sports. Accommodation prices are at their peak, with higher prices and very limited availability at quality properties, so expect to spend more. That said, the sea is beautifully warm, the nightlife is lively, and the island’s vibrant energy is in full swing — just prepare for crowds and heat.

Autumn (September–October): Blooming Landscapes

September is arguably the best time to visit Santorini, and for many travelers a particularly good time to visit Santorini. Coming right after peak season, the summer crowds have thinned significantly, but the sea is at its warmest (25–27°C), temperatures are hot but not oppressive (25–30°C), and sunsets are spectacular. Restaurants and hotels are still fully open, and prices start to ease from August peaks, which can make this feel like the ideal season for a quieter trip. You also get stunning caldera views from terraces and hotels in autumn.

October remains warm (around 22°C) with excellent swimming conditions into mid-month; by late October the first autumnal weather arrives. In early autumn, especially late September, you can expect mild weather and good weather for sightseeing. Overall, this is an excellent time to visit Santorini for couples and foodies, with the harvest season for Santorini's distinctive Assyrtiko wine grapes underway in September and wine tasting adding to the appeal.

Winter (November–March): Fewer Crowds

Santorini in the winter season is a very different island — quiet, local, and still moving to Greece's off-season rhythm, stripped of its tourist apparatus. Some travelers come at this time to spend less on hotels and enjoy the villages without crowds. Most restaurants, bars, and hotels in Oia close entirely from November to March, but while much of Oia slows down, most daily life is centered in Fira, and the island's famous sunsets take on a melancholy, atmospheric beauty. For the small number of visitors who come in winter, the rewards include deserted caldera pathways, dramatically low prices, and a genuine sense of the island as it was before mass tourism. Smaller crowds also mean quieter corners and more limited links to other islands. However, the sea is too cold for swimming, some facilities are closed, and the weather — while mild by northern European standards (10–15°C) — can bring rain and wind. The black sand beaches and sites like Nea Kameni are better for sightseeing than for getting in the water at this time of year. Villas with caldera views can also be more affordable than in summer.
