Where to Stay in Santorini

May 28, 2026

Where you stay in Santorini shapes your entire experience of the island. The caldera-facing cliffside villages — Oia, Imerovigli, and Fira — offer the most dramatic settings and the most iconic accommodation, ranging from carved cave hotels with private plunge pools to boutique suites with uninterrupted caldera views.

Oia

Oia is the most coveted address on Santorini, home to some of the island's finest cave hotels and suite properties carved into the caldera cliffs. Staying here puts you at the heart of the sunset spectacle, with unparalleled views from your terrace and easy access to the village's best restaurants and boutiques. The trade-off is price — Oia commands the island's highest rates — and the daytime crowds of visitors who pour in from cruise ships and day tours. Most Oia hotels are accessed via long flights of steps from the main path, so consider mobility before booking. The experience of watching the sun sink into the Aegean from your own private terrace is, for many, worth every penny.

Imerovigli

Imerovigli sits on the highest point of the caldera rim between Oia and Fira, and offers some of Santorini's most dramatic views across to the volcanic islets and Oia. It is quieter than both its neighbours, with fewer restaurants and shops but a genuinely serene atmosphere. Several exceptional cave hotels and boutique suites are located here, some with the island's most impressive infinity pools. This is the choice for honeymooners and couples seeking seclusion without sacrificing the caldera experience.

Fira

Santorini's capital is the most practical base on the island — the transport hub, with the most restaurants, shops, and nightlife, and the easiest access to the rest of the island by bus or car. It also has caldera-view accommodation at a wider range of price points than Oia, making it a more accessible choice for couples and families who want the views without Oia's premium. The downside is that Fira is livelier (and noisier) than the other caldera villages and gets very busy during the day with cruise passengers.

Perissa and Kamari

The east-coast beach villages of Perissa and Kamari are Santorini's most affordable bases and a completely different experience from the caldera villages. Both have long black sand beaches with good swimming and a range of tavernas and beach bars. Accommodation here is mostly hotels and studios at mid-range and budget prices, without caldera views. This is the practical choice for travellers on a tighter budget or those who prioritise beach time over scenery.

Practical Tips

Book Santorini accommodation as early as possible — quality properties in Oia and Imerovigli are often sold out six to twelve months in advance for the July–August peak season and around Greek Orthodox Easter. All-inclusive deals are rare on Santorini; most hotels operate room-only or B&B. Car hire is recommended for flexible exploration of the island, but parking in Oia and Fira is extremely limited. Note that many caldera hotels require significant stair-climbing — check accessibility carefully if this is a concern.
