Karnak Temple Complex
The Karnak Temple Complex is the largest religious building ever constructed — a 2km² sacred precinct built and expanded over a period of 2,000 years by successive pharaohs from the Middle Kingdom through the Ptolemaic period. The Great Hypostyle Hall — 134 papyrus columns, 23 metres high, their surfaces covered in painted relief carvings — is one of the most staggering architectural spaces in existence. The complex also contains a sacred lake, avenues of ram-headed sphinxes, the Obelisk of Hatshepsut (the tallest surviving ancient obelisk in Egypt), and dozens of subsidiary sanctuaries and courts. Allow 2–3 hours minimum. The sound and light show at Karnak on evenings is worth experiencing despite its theatrical nature.
Valley of the Kings
The Valley of the Kings is the royal necropolis of Egypt's New Kingdom pharaohs (c. 1550–1070 BC) — a dry canyon in the Theban Hills where 63 royal tombs have been discovered, cut into the limestone cliffs with painted burial chambers of extraordinary quality. The standard ticket allows entry to three tombs; separate tickets are required for Tutankhamun's tomb (the smallest but most famous) and the Tomb of Seti I (the most magnificently decorated). Start early — by 10am the valley is full of tour groups and the heat in the tombs becomes intense. The tomb of Ramesses VI has some of the most spectacular astronomical ceiling paintings.
Luxor Temple and the Avenue of Sphinxes
The Luxor Temple, built primarily by Amenhotep III and Ramesses II, stands on the Nile corniche in the heart of the modern city — an extraordinary collision of antiquity and everyday life where the ancient columns tower over kebab stalls. The recently restored Avenue of Sphinxes (3km long, lined with 1,350 human-headed sphinx statues) reconnects Luxor Temple with Karnak for the first time in millennia — a remarkable archaeological achievement. The temple is at its most atmospheric after sunset when it is dramatically illuminated.
Hatshepsut's Mortuary Temple and the Colossi of Memnon
The Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari is architecturally unique among Egyptian temples — three colonnaded terraces rising against a natural amphitheatre of cliffs, designed by Hatshepsut's chief architect Senenmut. Hatshepsut, who ruled as pharaoh for 20 years, was one of ancient Egypt's most successful rulers — her temple is a statement of power and artistic vision. The Colossi of Memnon — two 18-metre seated statues of Amenhotep III — stand at the West Bank entrance like gatekeepers to the necropolis, framed by the rising sun in the morning.
Hot Air Ballooning and Nile Experiences
A hot air balloon flight at dawn over the West Bank — floating silently over the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's Temple, and the Nile — is widely considered one of Egypt's most extraordinary experiences. Flights last 45–60 minutes and launch approximately 30 minutes before sunrise. Book with reputable operators (Hod Hod Soliman, Sky Cruise) rather than touts. Felucca sailing on the Nile at sunset — a traditional wooden sailboat gliding past the temple-crowned banks — provides a very different but equally moving perspective on Luxor's grandeur.
