Choosing where to stay in Delhi depends largely on your priorities. The city is vast — roughly 1,500 square kilometres — and split between historic Old Delhi in the north and the planned corridors of New Delhi and South Delhi to the south. First-time visitors typically do best staying near Connaught Place or in South Delhi, both of which offer excellent metro connectivity, dining, and shopping while keeping a safe distance from Old Delhi's more chaotic streets.

Best Areas to Stay

Connaught Place (CP) is Delhi's commercial heart and one of the best-located neighbourhoods for tourists. The circular colonial-era marketplace sits at the intersection of several metro lines and is within easy reach of India Gate, Janpath market, and the Parliament area. Hotels here range from international business chains to mid-range options along the inner and outer circles. Paharganj, directly behind New Delhi Railway Station, is the classic backpacker neighbourhood — cheap guesthouses, budget hotels, and an energetic street scene, though it can feel overwhelming. South Delhi neighbourhoods like Hauz Khas, Safdarjung Enclave, and Defence Colony offer quieter, leafier settings with excellent cafés, boutique shops, and some of Delhi's best restaurants. They are slightly further from Old Delhi's monuments but well connected by metro. Aerocity, near Indira Gandhi International Airport, is ideal for stopover travellers or those with early-morning flights, hosting a cluster of international hotel chains.

Unique Accommodation

Delhi has a growing collection of heritage hotels and havelis — restored mansions turned boutique stays. The Lutyens Bungalow in New Delhi offers the feel of a private residence in the city's most exclusive diplomatic enclave. Near Humayun's Tomb, the Lodi – The Garden Restaurant complex is set within the UNESCO-protected Lodi Gardens. The iconic Imperial Hotel on Janpath, built in 1931, is an art deco masterpiece that has hosted heads of state and celebrities for nearly a century, complete with a gallery of colonial-era artworks and one of Delhi's finest cocktail bars.

Mid-Range Options

Delhi's mid-range segment is excellent value. The The Claridges in Lutyens' Delhi offers colonial elegance at rates well below comparable hotels in London or New York. In Hauz Khas, boutique properties in converted bungalows provide character and proximity to Delhi's creative neighbourhood. Bloom Rooms near Select Citywalk mall in Saket and FabHotel properties across South Delhi deliver clean, modern rooms with consistent service for INR 3,000–6,000 per night. Neighbourhood guesthouses in Nizamuddin East offer a more authentic Delhi experience within walking distance of the famous dargah (Sufi shrine).

Budget Stays

Paharganj remains Delhi's budget hub, with dozens of guesthouses offering rooms for INR 800–2,000. Zostel and Moustache Hostel have popular Delhi properties with dormitories, common rooms, and regular social events that make it easy to meet fellow travellers. For budget travellers preferring South Delhi, the Karol Bagh neighbourhood offers affordable options with better neighbourhood safety than Paharganj. Always read recent reviews and inspect the room before paying in budget accommodation.

Booking Tips

Book well in advance during October to March — Delhi's peak tourist season when temperatures are pleasant and every monument is at its best. The city fills up particularly during Diwali (October/November), when hotels in popular areas can be fully booked weeks in advance. Avoid rooms directly on main roads in Old Delhi — the noise and air quality can be challenging. If visiting during the Delhi Half Marathon (November) or major international cricket matches, accommodation in central Delhi becomes very scarce. Always check whether your hotel includes airport/railway station pick-up — this can save considerable hassle on arrival in an unfamiliar city. Factor in that Delhi's metro stops running around midnight; if you plan late nights, stay somewhere with easy taxi access.
