Where to Stay in Peru

May 28, 2026

Peru's accommodation landscape is as diverse as its geography — from sophisticated luxury hotels in Lima's Miraflores district to stone-walled boutique hotels in Cusco's historic center, from floating reed-island lodges on Lake Titicaca to remote Amazon jungle retreats accessible only by boat or small plane. The key to great accommodation in Peru is matching your base to your travel priorities.

Best Areas to Stay by Region

In Lima, Miraflores is the top choice for most visitors — safe, walkable, packed with restaurants and cafés, and 20 minutes from the historic center. Barranco, Lima's bohemian arts neighborhood, suits travelers who prefer a more creative, local atmosphere. In Cusco, staying in the historic center (within walking distance of the Plaza de Armas) places you in the heart of the most beautiful colonial city in South America. The Sacred Valley — staying in Urubamba or Ollantaytambo rather than Cusco — offers more direct access to Machu Picchu and the valley's Inca sites, with a quieter, less touristy atmosphere. Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu, allows for an early morning first entry before day-tripper crowds arrive.

Luxury Hotels

Peru's luxury lodges and hotels are genuinely world-class. Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel adjacent to Machu Picchu's entrance gate, offers an unrivaled position with 31 rooms and access to the ruins before and after they open to day visitors — at a price to match. Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel in Aguas Calientes is a stunning collection of bungalows in lush cloud forest gardens with private access to rare orchid collections and bird-watching trails. In the Sacred Valley, Belmond Rio Sagrado offers exquisite river-side cottages in a dramatic valley setting. In Lima, Belmond Miraflores Park and JW Marriott Lima offer the city's finest luxury with stunning Pacific Ocean views from Miraflores cliffs. Titilaka Lodge on Lake Titicaca is an extraordinary design lodge built on a private peninsula with complete stillness and outstanding service.

Mid-Range Hotels

Peru's mid-range market, particularly in Cusco and Lima, is excellent. In Cusco, colonial mansions converted to boutique hotels — many with original Inca stone walls incorporated into their architecture — offer extraordinary atmosphere at mid-range prices. Inkaterra La Casona in a Cusco colonial palace and Casa Andina Premium (a reliable Peruvian chain) throughout the country represent excellent mid-range value. In Lima, Miraflores and Barranco have numerous boutique hotels offering excellent service and superb restaurant access at reasonable rates. In Arequipa, the White City's colonial sillar-stone buildings have been beautifully converted to boutique hotels around flower-filled courtyards.

Budget Accommodation

Peru has one of South America's best hostel networks. Cusco in particular has excellent hostels — many in beautiful colonial buildings with shared courtyards — at very low prices. The Loki Hostel chain operates reliable properties in Cusco, Lima, and other cities. In Lima, Miraflores and Barranco have good budget hostels — The Point and Flying Dog Hostels (multiple Lima locations) are consistently well-reviewed. Budget travelers in the Sacred Valley can find extremely affordable accommodation in homestays and simple guesthouses in Pisac and Ollantaytambo. In the Amazon, basic lodges in Puerto Maldonado offer affordable jungle access for travelers on tight budgets.

Booking Tips

Book Machu Picchu-area accommodation as far in advance as possible — the Sanctuary Lodge and best Aguas Calientes hotels regularly sell out 6+ months ahead. Inti Raymi festival in Cusco (June 24) and Carnival (February) cause significant demand spikes in Cusco — book well ahead for these dates. The rainy season (November–April) offers lower hotel rates at most Peru destinations — the Inca Trail closes entirely in February. Most mid-range and luxury hotels in Peru include breakfast. Altitude sickness is a consideration for highland accommodation — some upscale hotels in Cusco provide supplemental oxygen in rooms. Belmond and Orient-Express trains connecting Cusco to Machu Picchu should be booked simultaneously with your accommodation for the best available departure times.
