Most of the Côte d'Or's greatest domaines are within 20 km. Dijon suits travellers who want a proper city experience — good transport links (TGV from Paris), excellent museums, vibrant nightlife, and a covered market that is one of France's finest. It's slightly north of the main wine country but very well positioned. The villages of the Côte d'Or — Gevrey-Chambertin, Vougeot, Meursault, Pommard — offer the most atmospheric stays, often in converted vineyard properties right in the middle of the appellations. Vézelay in the north is ideal for those combining wine with Romanesque heritage and cycling the Morvan hills.
