Rome: The Eternal City
Rome is unlike any other city on earth — a living, breathing capital where ancient ruins, Renaissance palaces, Baroque fountains, and contemporary street life coexist in spectacular density. The Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill together form the world's greatest concentration of ancient monuments. Vatican City — the Sistine Chapel, St Peter's Basilica, and the Vatican Museums — demands at least a full day. The Amalfi Coast and Naples
The Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, ranks among the world's most dramatic coastal drives — a narrow road clinging to limestone cliffs above a turquoise sea, punctuated by the pastel-coloured towns of Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. Naples, the chaotic and exhilarating capital of the south, is the gateway to the region and to Pompeii and Herculaneum — the Roman towns buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD and preserved in extraordinary detail. The islands of Capri and Ischia, both easily reached by ferry from Naples, offer spectacular scenery, luxury hotels, and boat trips through sea caves.
The Lakes and the Dolomites
Northern Italy's lake district — Como, Maggiore, Garda — has attracted visitors since Roman times with its combination of Alpine scenery, mild climate, and elegant villa gardens. Lake Como in particular, with its impossibly picturesque villages and backdrop of soaring mountains, remains one of Italy's most romantic destinations. Further east, the Dolomites — a UNESCO-listed mountain range in the South Tyrol — offer some of Europe's finest hiking and ski terrain, with dramatic pink-tinged limestone spires rising above traditional Alpine villages that blend Italian and Austrian cultures.
